After months of training and preparation, the University of Nottingham Taekwondo Club is about to face another tough challenge as members take on the annual National Student Championships that will take place this weekend at Worcester. The event will play host to a number of events including Poomsae patterns and Kyorugi (sparring) which will cater to both ITF and WTF styles of Taekwondo.
The club hopes to follow on the success that was achieved towards the end of 2016 at which delegates were sent to participate in two independent competitions. The first of which is the 33rd TTA Individual Championships held in Glasgow, where participants of all classes gathered from different sister clubs around the country to engage in a friendly tournament. UoN Taekwondo club topped the medals table, having garnered 9 golds, 5 silvers and 5 bronzes across the different disciplines, with three of its delegates being recognised in the event’s Top 10 performing individuals. The club was also awarded the Team Spirit Cup as the competition drew to a conclusion.
UoN Taekwondo also received an invitation to partake at the 5th Imperial College Open Tournament held in London, which marked the club’s debut at this annual event. Captained by the club’s president, Vinotharan Annarasa, the team fought their way onto the podium securing 1 gold, 1 silver and 3 bronze medals. The successful feat gave the club a recognition that would hopefully catapult the university team’s identity in this sport and pave way for more future competitions in a bid to maintain its glorious streak.
The British Student Taekwondo Federation (BSTF) Championships indicate the start of a new season of challenges for the university’s Taekwondo club. The event will particularly pose a huge venture for the new members who have yet to experience the thrill of competing.
The club most certainly wishes everybody the best of luck this weekend and have a fantastic time!
